Intermediate School Presents Blacks in Wax Feb. 19 at Grounds for Sculpture

Blacks in Wax Intermediate School 2023

It’s back! Join our Intermediate School scholars Sunday Feb. 19 at Grounds for Sculpture as they present “Blacks in Wax” to celebrate #BlackHistoryMonth.

Admission is FREE for FA families, scholars, and staff  during the event, which runs from Noon to 2 pm on Sunday, Feb. 19, 2023 in the GFS gallery.

Blacks in Wax is an FA tradition inviting scholars to select, research and portray people who inspire them. This will be the first time since the pandemic that our scholars will be creating a living museum for the public.

Blacks in Wax originated with now CEO Sheria McRae when she was a Middle School principal as a creative way for scholars to understand the influence of Black people around the world, present and past. Hosting the event at Grounds for Sculpture empowers our scholars to share their pride, culture, and creativity with a community audience.

“Blacks in Wax is one way we deliver on Our Promise to equip scholars to excel in learning and empower them to lead purpose-filled lives,” Mrs. McRae noted. “Our Scholars invest their time researching, writing, and practicing to ensure they do their part to tell the story of Black icons and Black culture. As scholars portray these role models, they also learn life lessons.”

Scholars will be portraying such notables as Malcolm X, Shaka (Zulu chief), Michelle Obama, Mansa Musa, Celia Cruz, Simone Biles, Michael Jackson, and Josephine Baker.

Grounds for Sculpture is happy to welcome back Foundation Academies, said Tiffany Allen, manager of School & Group Visits at GFS.

"This is an opportunity for exposure to art and for them to showcase the rich history of African Americans, especially during this month as we celebrate Black History Month," she added. "Our patrons are people who do appreciate art -- so this is the right place for that type of performance and interpretation."
