Friends of FA Presents: Impact Stories, Winter 2023

Corporate Volunteers Share Their Love of Books with Scholars

College Visits Help Expand Scholars’ Horizons

For some college-bound students, traveling to prospective schools can be financially out of the question. This fall, with support from the Friends, 48 FA students took a 3-day college tour of schools in Washington, DC.

The tour was a partnership with Young Scholars Institute, a non-profit learning center that provides educational, cultural, and recreational activities for students in pre-K through 12th grade.

FA College and Career Advisor Courtney Agyeman, joined students to visit the campuses of Morgan State University, Howard University, Coppin State, Georgetown University and American University.

“My experience was amazing and opened me up to more college options than I previously had, said 10th grader Nelson Ruiz. “I enjoyed the tours while learning valuable information about each college. I am grateful for the opportunity to be able to see these colleges in person, some that I never knew of and am now considering. I look forward to the next trip.”

Scholars toured campuses, spoke with college admission representatives, and sampled dorm food. They also took time to visit some sights in our nation's capital.

“I cannot thank you enough for providing this opportunity to our scholars,” said Courtney Agyeman, FA College and Career Advisor. “It was a life-changing trip for them to see life outside of Trenton, New Jersey – some for the first time. I have already been approached by students asking about a spring break trip to North Carolina and Georgia. One even messaged me before the bus returned back to Trenton. 😂 Looking forward to many more opportunities!”

If you were a recipient of a call or handwritten note, our scholars probably told you that your gift truly made a difference in their lives... Because it does!

Foundation Academies invites men from the community to join our annual 100 Man Welcome cheering scholars K-12 and celebrating education at 7 a.m. Friday, Feb. 10, 2023.

"This is a great way to show children that our community values their hard work in the classroom," said FA CEO Sheria McRae. "To see positive, caring men from our community -- not just teachers -- celebrating education motivates our scholars to stay focused and finish the school year strong."

The event kicks off with a light breakfast and rally led by Pastor Tone Bellamy of Transformation Church providing an opportunity for participants to share inspiration and encouragement before lining campus hallways to share positive energy with arriving scholars. We ask participants to please register in advance at https://bit.ly/100ManFA.
