Black History Month continues this morning with FA Primary! This month our scholars are learning about children who made a difference in the past and our present (and YOU in our future)! How many of these children’s names do you know?
- Ruby Bridges
- Claudette Colvin
- Mari “Little Miss Flint”
- Nyeeam Hudson “King Naa”
Page through the slideshow and Introduce yourself to their stories!

Our celebration continues today courtesy of Mr. Isiah Jones and a reminder about this year’s theme, and a video curated by Mr. Jones to give a little more background on midwives and explores the evolution of Black birthing traditions in America. Watch and learn!

To help kick off the celebration, our own Isiah Jones (History Teacher – FA Collegiate) offers this great video resource from Stanford historian Michael Hines. Learn about the misunderstandings and misconceptions about the beginnings and evolution of Black History Month.

The theme for FA’s 2022 celebration focuses on the importance of Black Health and Wellness. This theme acknowledges the legacy of not only Black scholars and medical practitioners in Western medicine, but also other ways of knowing (e.g., birthworkers, doulas, midwives, naturopaths, herbalists, etc.) throughout the African Diaspora. The 2022 theme considers activities, rituals, and initiatives that Black communities have done to be well.
The Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH®) has several great resources including a summary of this month’s theme (select the nearby image/link) and a Virtual Festival (follow this link for more information).
