Spring CSL Group Updates – Urban Voice and Trenton Clean Up Crew

This spring, our high school juniors continue to make a positive impact through their Civic Service Learning projects. We are so proud of their dedication and determination through the many challenges and limitations presented by the pandemic. Here’s a quick update on what two of our CSL groups have been working on!

The Trenton Clean-Up Crew maintains social distancing while completing their first community clean up event.

Trenton Clean-Up Crew Takes Action

In early March, La’Zaria Hairston led her CSL group, The Trenton Clean-Up Crew, in their first event in the neighborhood surrounding Foundation Academy Collegiate.

Twenty-eight students attended and worked together to beautify the neighborhood. The group was able to gather enough trash and waste to fill an entire dumpster!

The Crew’s next stop was the Trenton Police Department in late March, where students partnered with Detective Veal and the Trenton Police Community Affairs Unit to tackle Grant Ave, Perrine Ave, Tyrell Ave, Oak St, & Hart St.

Well done, scholars!

Urban Voice and The Campaign to End the New Jim Crow

The Civic Service Learning group Urban Voice, led by Briana Araya, recently worked with 12 students at FA Collegiate to educate them on mass incarceration and discrimination.

After working together in weekly sessions, the students wrote and submitted poetry to The Campaign to End the New Jim Crow’s (CENJC) yearly Advancing Justice Rap, Poetry, Essay, Spoken Word Contest. We are so pleased to announce that FOUR of our students were named as winners, and will be recognized at the Advancing Justice Reception on May 7th!

Congratulations to Victoria King who won First Place, Tajir Reynolds and Raymond Villegas who tied for Third Place, and Favour Ngige, who won Fourth Place.

We are very excited about the progress all of our student CSL groups are making this year, and can’t wait to see what they’ll accomplish next.
